The time for planning and coordinating a response to the flooding on Lake of the Woods is over.

Sunday showed us that the Lake of the Woods can cause immense damage in minutes. The wind reared its ugly head Sunday when the swollen waters of the lake relentlessly pounded the shoreline, inundating homes and businesses with lake water.

The Williams and Baudette Fire Departments responded to homes in danger, propane tanks in the yards were at risk of floating away. It’s not ideal to have the first responders filling sandbags, it is something citizens can do and it’s time to step up.

The County is hosting a volunteer sandbagging event from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday of this week, June 29 and 30. Volunteers need to show up at the County Garage and lend their help.

This situation is serious. A winds and waves are destroying our county.

If you are physically able, please show up Wednesday or Thursday.
