Sheriff’s Office warns public of increase in scam calls

by Lake of the Woods County Sheriff's Office

The Lake of the Woods County Sheriff’s Office has seen an increase in the number of scam calls being reported.

“We have been receiving more scam calls lately, especially people pretending to be from Amazon,” said Sheriff Gary Fish.

According to Amazon.com, “Some departments at Amazon will make outbound calls to customers, but Amazon will never ask a customer to disclose or verify sensitive personal information or offer you a refund you do not expect.”

The company recommends that you report any suspicious or fraudulent phone calls to their website.

Calls and text messages can also be reported to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). To report a call to the FTC, visit ftc.gov/complaint and follow the onscreen assistant. You can also call 1-877-382-4357 (TTY: 1-866-653-4261).
