Cleaning up the Riverbanks and Shorelines

April 19, 2022

Now that the snow is finally melting, can you see that your streambank or shoreline was used as a garbage dump site in the 1940’s? Have trees blown down and are now inhibiting other plants from growing? Do you have old retaining wall posts that need to come out? Garbage and fallen trees along shorelines and riverbanks are not only unsightly but can also be harmful to wildlife and cause erosion.

The Lake of the Woods Soil and Water Conservation District is hosting a Minnesota Conservation Corps crew in June. The crew will be available to help landowners in Lake of the Woods County with shoreline and riverbank cleanups free of charge. Conservation Corps Crews serve outdoors restoring habitat, managing natural resources, and occasionally responding to natural disasters or community needs.

If you have a site or know of a spot that needs cleaning, please call to set up a site visit in April or May with the Lake of the Woods Soil and Water Conservation District office at 218-634-1842 ext. 4.
