Daniel E. Ullstrom, 74
Dan left this earth on February 27, 2024. he was born to Harold and Ellen Ullstrom on July 1, 1949. During a long period of declining health, he became an avid reader.
Growing up in the small community of Rako, thirty miles south of Baudette, Minnesota, was a unique experience. Unlike his later schoolmates and contemporaries, Dan did not have a typical “growing up in the fifties” childhood. He was raised on a farm, and his home had no electricity, running water, or even a telephone until 1977. But there, he learned to hunt, fish, and love the woods.
Dan came of age in an era of one-room schools where his mother was the teacher of eleven students, three of them her children. When the school system was consolidated, all the rural children were bussed to the county seat of Baudette. Dan graduated from Baudette High School in 1967 and then went to Bemidji State College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Business. He went on to manage a fast food franchise in Minneapolis and later was a long-time employee of the United States Postal Service.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his older brother, Gene Ullstrom. He is survived by brothers John and Bill and his sister Mary Messenger (Chris), his sister-in-law, Delores Ullstrom, and a host of cousins, nieces and nephews. Dan was a gentle and kind man and will be deeply missed.
