Samuel Pierce

October 19, 2022

Samuel Houston Pierce died peacefully at his home in Baudette, MN on October 3rd, 2022 with his family at his side.

Sam was born in Mobile, Alabama, to Ralph and Anna Katherine (Kate) Pierce on November 22, 1962.

Sam's early life was spent in Greenville, AL, where he learned to enjoy camping, fishing and working on cars. He learned the art of doing body work (painting cars, etc) and this passion followed him throughout his life. He really enjoyed "Muscle Cars" and "hot rods". Even after he was no longer able to do any work on or with cars, he still enjoyed watching them on YouTube.
Sam was a passionate person who held strong opinions and was not afraid to voice those opinions. People who lied to him — saying they were going to do something and then not following through — really drove him nuts. He tried his hardest to be honest in his dealings with others.

After the death of his father in 1981, Sam's mother "Kate" and he moved to northern Minnesota, specifically Baudette, to stay with Sam's half sister, Glenda Wallace, and her family. Over the years, some of these extended family members had lived at the Pierce household in Alabama.

Not long after arriving in the area, Sam's mom, Kate, fell in love with and married Andy Lystad.

Sam moved to Carp, MN, to live at the Lystad home. While living there he ended up gaining a few new step-siblings and developed some new friendships. These included Neomi, Delilah, Neil, Phillip, Mary and Martha Lystad.

While at the rehearsal for Kate and Andy's wedding, Sam met his future wife, Arlene. They (Sam and Arlene) were married in May of 1984. They were blessed with birth of two children, Michael and Alicia .

After working at Marvin Windows for a few years, Sam went to work at Stan's Hardware Hank with Lee Sabatini. There were a few years that Sam worked on the crew that helped Lee Sabatini with the 4th of July fireworks display that was shown over the Baudette Bay.
After the Hardware Store was sold and Lee retired, Sam went to work at Pirkl Lumber. He worked at Pirkl's until he ended up developing COPD and had to retire due to health concerns.

Over the next few years, 17 years to be exact, Sam was in and out to the hospital many times dealing with multiple health issues. Eventually he ended up on continuous oxygen therapy. His mobility levels changed and eventually he was unable to get out and about much at all. In 2021, Sam ended up having COVID and was in the hospital for about a month. A few weeks later he returned to the hospital with pneumonia. He returned to his home and eventually became bed bound. He did end up returning to the hospital at least one more time. After this he returned to and remained in his home until his death on the 3rd of October, 2022 .
